Jun 26, 2022
Tswaing Meteor Crater is situated 40km north of Pretoria.
A distinctive ring of hills marks the site of a 200 000 years old asteroid impact. In the centre of the crater is a lake of salty water (13 times saltier than the dead sea) - this lake gives its name to the Tswaing reserve.
The reserve is 2000 hectares in area and is home to over 480 plant species, 240 bird species, zebra, impala, steenbok, brown hyeana etc. an adjacent wetland area adds to the bio-diversity of the area.
The hike from the reception area is +- 7.2 km long and goes from the reception area, along the crater rim down to the lake, and back up again. Natural salt deposits line the lake. Tektites - small glassy objects - from the meteorites impact may be found.
