More details about this hike

We aim to provide a gay, lesbian and straight-friendly hiking environment for anyone and everyone to enjoy the beautiful outdoors in the company of like-minded friends.

Mar 21, 2019

We looked far and wide to bring you the best outdoor experience any hiker would drool over. The gorgeous unspoiled natural beauty will calm your soul, while the surprises around every corner will thrill even the most adventurous among us. Fern-rich indigenous wooded ravines with clear streams and waterfalls create a restful atmosphere. Ancient ruins and rock art, unique rock formations, rock pools to swim in – these trails offer everything a nature enthusiast could ask for.

Situated about 20 km northeast of Carolina, Mpumalanga, this 1244 hectare farm is only 250 km from Johannesburg. It was proclaimed the Paulina van Niekerk Nature Reserve in 1965 and has a large variation in terrain forms and flora.

There are more than 90 identified and marked tree species and a large variety of wild flowers. The Knysna Loerie, Bald Ibus and large eagles count among the 160 bird species recorded on the farm. Baboons, monkeys, bush pigs, warthogs, klipspringers, rhebuck and other small animals are frequently encountered along the trials.

The trails with GREENFLAG accreditation are scientifically designed and expertly laid out to meet the needs of hikers and also to conserve the area.

Hike Summary

Thursday: Arrive at Suikerboschfontein at your own time. We will go directly to our overnight accommodation, which will be at the Rooikrans camp. The afternoon will be spent unpacking and exploring the area. There are three short hikes (4.5, 3 and 2.5 km) which can be done for those who wish to.

Friday: We walk the 10 km trail to Oom Japie, where we will spend the night. Those that would like to can hike with all their supplies on their backs, but the rest of us will load our stuff onto the vehicles which will meet us at the overnight camp. The Fern Pool is situated half a kilometre from the camp for those who would like to swim.

Saturday: A different 10 km trail will take us back to Rooikrans camp, where we will spend the night. On this hike you can see rock art, a baboon hotel and ancient ruins. Hikers can also cool down in the Rock Pool before reaching the camp.

Sunday: Those who are not tired yet, can choose to walk one of the shorter trials before we head back home.
