This is our first official visit to this splendid venue, Thwane Trail, situated in a Natural World Heritage Site. The Vredefort Dome landscape, consisting of high concentric ridges, was created about 2200 million years ago when an asteroid, +/- 10 km in diameter, struck the earth where the town of Vredefort is situated today. This is the largest & oldest meteorite impact site in the world, the effect being evident as far afield as a few100 km from the point of smashing through the earth’s crust, creating unique geological phenomena. Also of interest are the abundant ecological & historical features in the area.

From Thwane, we will be doing a moderate circular hiking route of approximately 12 km with a shorter easy 4 km option available. We will enjoy most spectacular views of the Dome impact structure from Dwarsberg, the highest point in the Dome, & other elevated ridges along the hike. Also at Dwarsberg is the largest Free State Province stand of magnificent Protea. We will also be able to admire the typical savanna thorn bush vegetation & several interesting iron-age stone enclosures along the way.

You will be free to go off for lunch after the hike, or join us at the beautiful Thwane Bush Camp for a picnic lunch or braai. A swimming pool is also available.

Should you wish to make a weekend of your trip to this beautiful region of South Africa, Thwane offers accommodation in luxury permanent tents. Other accommodation rurally & in the nearby towns of Parys & Vredefort, is plentiful.
