Join us on a hike in a nature reserve with giraffes, zebras, blesboks, impalas and wildebeests near Pretoria in the vicinity of the famous Cullinan diamond mine.

Somabula is located not far from the small town of Cullinan, famous for its diamond mine. It is a private wildlife reserve located in a wonderful setting. In addition to self-catering cottages, including accommodation in lovely restored ox-wagons, the reserve attracts day visitors with unguided wildlife hikes, game drives (self-drive), horseback riding and mountain biking. The area around the ox-wagons is also a good picnic area with very clean and prettily decorated bathrooms. This is where we will have our braai for lunch. Please bring your own food, etc. and join us for a lovely lunch after the hike.

We will be exploring an elaborate network of trails that makes the reserve an ideal place for the enthusiastic nature lover. The nature reserve has an abundance of wildlife including impressive giraffes who are always curious to find out more about you. We will do our best to find them on our hike. The views from the hillside are wonderful and the reserve is well managed with all animals in top condition.

  • Arrive at 8:30 to start at 9am
  • An easy 8.6 KM trail, mostly on flat terrain and on a koppie that is easy to navigate.
  • A 6.4 KM hike is an option for those who like to return to the braai area earlier.
  • Braai facilities are available, but bring a packed lunch if you choose to do the longer hike.
  • Entrance fee: R60 (includes R10 club fee)
  • To enter the reserve, you need an access code to open the gate. We will post the code on the gate until 8:45. If you arrive later, please call Hantie for the code. The barn that acts as the visitors’ center is a few minutes’ drive from the gate. This is where we will meet and start our hike.
